Description:
Jatropha is a diverse genus of plants within the Euphorbiaceae family, ranging from shrubs and small trees to highly sought-after caudiciform species. Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Madagascar, and the Americas, many Jatropha species are prized for their swollen trunks, sculptural forms, and attractive foliage. Species such as Jatropha podagrica, Jatropha cathartica, and Jatropha berlandieri are especially popular among collectors for their distinctive caudexes and ornamental appearance.
Many Jatrophas produce clusters of vibrant flowers in shades of red, coral, pink, orange, or yellow that can appear over extended periods of the year. Their combination of dramatic structure and colourful blooms makes them standout specimens in succulent and caudiciform collections.
General Care:
- Light: Prefers bright light to full sun. Strong sunlight promotes compact growth and flowering.
- Water: Water regularly during the active growing season, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during dormancy, especially for deciduous species.
- Soil: Requires a very well-draining succulent mix with added grit, pumice, or coarse sand.
- Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions and should be protected from frost. Ideal range is 15–35°C.
- Feeding: Feed during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer to encourage growth and flowering.
- Maintenance: Easy to grow when provided with warmth, sunlight, and excellent drainage. Avoid overwatering during dormant periods.
Note: Like many members of the Euphorbiaceae family, Jatropha species contain a milky sap that can be irritating if handled improperly.
With their swollen trunks, striking flowers, and tropical character, Jatropha species are rewarding plants that offer year-round interest and exceptional collector appeal.
