Jatropha yukinosato

Jatropha podagrica – Budha Belly

Description:
Jatropha podagrica, commonly known as the Buddha Belly Plant or Gout Plant, is one of the most distinctive caudiciforms in cultivation. Native to Central America, it is instantly recognised by its swollen, bottle-shaped trunk that stores water, giving the plant its characteristic sculptural appearance. Long leaf stalks hold large, rounded grey-green leaves above the caudex, creating the look of a miniature tropical tree.

Throughout much of the year, mature plants produce clusters of brilliant coral-red to orange flowers held high above the foliage on tall stems. These vibrant blooms are followed by decorative seed capsules that often burst open when ripe, naturally dispersing their seeds. The combination of an impressive caudex, bold foliage, and continuous flowering makes Jatropha podagrica a favourite among collectors of caudiciforms and unusual succulents.

General Care:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light or gentle morning sun. Avoid harsh afternoon sun, which may scorch the leaves or fade the variegation.
  • Water: Water moderately during active growth, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering during winter.
  • Soil: Requires a well-draining succulent or cactus mix with added grit, pumice, or coarse sand.
  • Temperature: Thrives in mild to warm conditions and should be protected from frost. Ideal range is 10–30°C.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during spring and summer with a balanced succulent fertilizer.
  • Maintenance: Easy to grow and slow-growing. Ensure good airflow and avoid prolonged wet conditions. Offsets can be separated to propagate new plants.

Like freshly fallen snow captured within its leaves, Haworthia ‘Yukinosato’ is a living work of art—subtle, elegant, and treasured by collectors around the world.
