Sceletium tortuosum

Sceletium tortuosum – Kanna

Description:
Sceletium tortuosum, commonly known as Kanna, is a fascinating indigenous South African succulent belonging to the Aizoaceae family. It forms a low-growing, spreading mat of fleshy leaves that range from bright green to grey-green, often becoming more compact and woody with age. The leaves are smooth and succulent, while the stems gradually develop a sprawling, shrubby appearance.

During the flowering season, Kanna produces attractive daisy-like flowers in shades of white, pale yellow, or soft pink, adding delicate beauty to this hardy plant. For centuries, Sceletium tortuosum has been an important plant in southern Africa and holds a unique place in the region’s ethnobotanical history.

Its drought tolerance, attractive growth habit, and indigenous heritage make it a valuable addition to waterwise gardens, rockeries, and succulent collections.

General Care:

  • Light: Prefers full sun to bright light. Strong sunlight promotes compact growth and healthy flowering.
  • Water: Water moderately during active growth, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant.
  • Soil: Requires a well-draining succulent mix or sandy garden soil.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions and tolerates light frost. Ideal range is 5–35°C.
  • Feeding: Requires very little feeding but benefits from occasional fertilizer during the growing season.
  • Maintenance: Easy to grow and highly adaptable. Prune lightly if needed to encourage branching and maintain shape.

Sceletium tortuosum is more than just a succulent—it is a living piece of South African botanical heritage, carrying centuries of history within its humble leaves.
