Pachypodium bispinosum – Baboon Food
Pachypodium bispinosum
Description:
Pachypodium bispinosum is a remarkable caudiciform succulent native to South Africa’s Eastern Cape. It is prized for its large, swollen trunk-like caudex, which serves as a water reservoir and gives the plant its distinctive bottle-shaped appearance. From the upper portion of the caudex emerge short, spiny branches bearing narrow green leaves during the growing season.
In late summer and autumn, mature plants produce beautiful trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of pink, mauve, or purple, often with darker veining. These striking blooms appear when the plant is in leaf and create a stunning contrast against the rugged, thorny stems. Its sculptural form and seasonal floral display make it one of the most sought-after South African pachypodiums among collectors.
General Care:
- Light: Prefers full sun to very bright light. Strong sunlight encourages compact growth and healthy caudex development.
- Water: Water regularly during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during winter dormancy when the plant may lose its leaves.
- Soil: Requires a very well-draining succulent mix with added grit, pumice, or coarse sand.
- Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions and should be protected from frost. Ideal range is 10–35°C.
- Feeding: Feed lightly during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer to encourage healthy growth and flowering.
- Maintenance: Easy to grow when provided with excellent drainage. Avoid overwatering during dormancy.
Pachypodium bispinosum is nature’s perfect balance of strength and beauty—a rugged, thorn-covered survivor that rewards patience with some of the most beautiful flowers in the caudiciform world.
