Genus Olea – Olive

Description:
Olea is a genus of evergreen trees and shrubs within the Oleaceae family, native to Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Mediterranean region. The genus is best known for the cultivated Olive (Olea europaea) and the African Wild Olive (Olea europaea subsp. africana), both of which have been admired for centuries for their beauty, resilience, and longevity.

Olea species are characterised by their small, leathery leaves, rugged bark, naturally twisted trunks, and exceptional ability to withstand drought and harsh conditions. As they age, the bark develops deep fissures and textured character, while old trunks often form hollows and natural deadwood, giving them the appearance of ancient trees. Small creamy-white flowers are produced in spring or summer, followed by olive-like fruits that ripen from green to purple or black.

Because of their naturally small leaves, excellent back-budding, and ability to produce dense ramification, Olea species are considered among the finest trees for bonsai. They are suitable for a wide range of traditional bonsai styles, including informal upright, broom, slanting, windswept, and literati.

General Bonsai Care:

  • Light: Prefers full sun to very bright light. Ample sunlight promotes compact growth, fine branching, and smaller leaves.
  • Water: Water thoroughly when the soil begins to dry. While mature trees are drought tolerant, bonsai require regular watering due to their limited root volume.
  • Soil: Use a free-draining bonsai mix that provides excellent aeration while retaining moderate moisture.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm climates and tolerates light frost. Protect young trees and recently repotted specimens from severe cold.
  • Feeding: Feed regularly during the growing season with a balanced bonsai fertilizer to encourage healthy growth and ramification.
  • Maintenance: Prune frequently to maintain shape and encourage fine branching. Young branches wire easily, while older branches become stiff and brittle. Repot every two to four years depending on the age and vigour of the tree.

Few trees embody the spirit of bonsai like an olive. With every passing season, an Olea develops more character, reminding us that true beauty is not created in a moment—but earned through patience and time.
