Kalanchoe sexangularis

Kalanchoe sexangularis – Six-angled Kalanchoe

Kalanchoe sexangularis, commonly known as the Red-Leaved Kalanchoe, is a striking South African succulent admired for its colourful foliage and robust growth. It forms upright stems lined with fleshy, scalloped leaves that are bright green in shade but develop vivid red to burgundy margins when grown in full sun. The contrast between the green leaf centres and fiery red edges makes this species particularly eye-catching throughout the year.

During winter and early spring, mature plants produce tall flower stalks topped with clusters of small, tubular yellow flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. Its bold colour, ease of cultivation, and drought tolerance make it a popular choice for succulent gardens, waterwise landscapes, and large containers.

General Care:

  • Light: Prefers bright light to partial sun. Morning sun enhances colour while protecting the soft foliage from excessive heat.
  • Water: Water moderately during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering during winter.
  • Soil: Requires a well-draining succulent or cactus mix with added grit or pumice.
  • Temperature: Thrives in mild to warm conditions and should be protected from frost. Ideal range is 10–30°C.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during spring and summer with a balanced succulent fertilizer.
  • Maintenance: Easy to grow and drought tolerant. Remove spent flower stalks and old leaves to keep the plant looking its best.

Crassula swaziensis may be small in stature, but its velvety leaves and vibrant flowers prove that some of nature’s finest details come in the most compact packages.
