Crassula thyrsiflora – Shark’s Tooth Crassula

Crassula capitella var. thyrsiflora, commonly known as “propeller plant” or “thyrsiflorus,” is a visually striking succulent variety known for its distinctive shape and vibrant color changes.

  • Leaves: The leaves of Crassula capitella var. thyrsiflora are fleshy, spoon-shaped, and arranged in tight rosettes that radiate outwards. The leaves have a unique reddish or pinkish tint, particularly at the tips or edges. This color can become more pronounced when the plant is stressed by factors like full sun or cooler temperatures. The leaves may also have a slightly translucent quality when viewed up close, giving them a glossy, almost glowing appearance.
  • Growth Habit: This variety grows in dense, compact clusters that form a low, spreading mat. It can reach about 12 inches (30 cm) in height and can spread up to 12-16 inches (30-40 cm) in width. The rosettes form in a somewhat spiral or fan shape, giving the plant a “propeller” look, which adds to its ornamental value.
  • Flowers: Crassula capitella var. thyrsiflora produces small, star-like flowers in late spring or early summer. These flowers are typically white or pale pink and grow in clusters on slender, branching stems that emerge from the center of the rosettes.

Native Range:

This plant is native to South Africa, specifically found in rocky, well-drained areas. Like other members of the Crassula genus, it thrives in arid, drought-prone environments where it has adapted to store water in its thick, fleshy leaves.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: This plant prefers bright, indirect sunlight but can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the cooler seasons. Too much shade can result in leggy growth and reduced coloration, so it’s best to provide it with ample light, but avoid excessive midday sun to prevent sunburn, especially in hot climates.
  • Soil: Like most succulents, Crassula capitella var. thyrsiflora requires well-draining soil. A cactus or succulent mix is ideal, but you can improve drainage by adding perlite or sand. This plant is particularly sensitive to root rot, so ensuring the soil dries out between waterings is essential.
  • Watering: Water the plant deeply, but infrequently. It’s important to allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the dormant winter months, you can reduce watering to avoid over-saturating the roots. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it’s better to underwater than overwater.
  • Temperature: Crassula capitella var. thyrsiflora thrives in warm, temperate climates. It can tolerate temperatures between 60°F and 85°F (15°C to 30°C). While it is somewhat frost-tolerant, it is best to bring the plant indoors or provide protection during freezing temperatures.
  • Fertilization: You can feed this plant with a diluted, balanced fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer), about once every 4-6 weeks. Avoid fertilizing during the winter, as the plant enters a dormant phase.

Unique and Special Characteristics:

What makes Crassula capitella var. thyrsiflora particularly unique is its distinctive “propeller-like” rosette growth pattern. The compact, spreading clusters of leaves are not only visually interesting but also highly adaptable in various growing conditions. The plant’s color changes—shifting from green to red or purple when exposed to stress or sunlight—give it an ever-changing appearance that enhances its ornamental value.

In addition to its captivating form and color, this plant is also a low-maintenance succulent, making it an excellent choice for beginners or busy plant enthusiasts. Its resilience to drought and low watering requirements further add to its appeal, and it can be a standout feature in succulent gardens, containers, or even hanging baskets. Its small, dainty flowers in the summer are also a delightful bonus, making it a true beauty in any collection.
