Cleistocactus colademononis – Appearance and General Care

Description:
Cleistocactus colademononis, commonly known as the Monkey Tail Cactus, is one of the most unusual and sought-after trailing cacti in cultivation. It produces long, arching stems densely covered in soft, silky white hairs that resemble a monkey’s tail. As the stems mature, they cascade gracefully from hanging baskets and elevated pots, creating a dramatic display. During the warmer months, mature plants reward growers with brilliant red to deep pink tubular flowers that emerge along the stems, providing a striking contrast against the fuzzy white spination.

General Care:

  • Light: Prefers bright light with some protection from harsh afternoon sun. Morning sun is ideal.
  • Water: Water thoroughly during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during winter.
  • Soil: Requires a well-draining cactus mix with added grit, pumice, or coarse sand.
  • Temperature: Enjoys warm conditions and should be protected from frost. Ideal range is 10–30°C.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during spring and summer with a cactus fertilizer to encourage healthy growth and flowering.
  • Maintenance: Best grown in hanging baskets or elevated containers where the stems can trail freely. Avoid overwatering and ensure excellent drainage.

With its spectacular cascading stems, soft furry appearance, and vivid flowers, Cleistocactus colademononis is a true showpiece and one of the most popular hanging cacti among collectors worldwide.
