The Cactaceae family, commonly known as the cactus family, is one of the most distinctive plant families. With approximately 127 genera and over 1,500 species, cacti are primarily native to the Americas, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. These plants are well adapted to dry environments, showcasing unique features that allow them to thrive in harsh, water-scarce conditions. - Stem Structure: Cacti typically have thick, fleshy stems that store water, enabling survival through prolonged droughts. These stems are often ribbed or grooved, allowing them to expand and contract with water intake.
- Spines: Instead of leaves, most cacti have spines, which are modified leaves. Spines help reduce water loss, provide shade, and protect the plant from herbivores. The spines arise from unique structures called areoles, which are small, cushion-like structures unique to cacti.
- Photosynthesis: Unlike most plants, cacti perform a type of photosynthesis called CAM (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism), allowing them to open their stomata at night to minimize water loss.
