Astrophytum myriostigma nudum

Astrophytum myriostigma nudum – The Bishop’s Cap

Astrophytum myriostigma var. nudum, often simply referred to as the nude bishop’s cap, is a striking cactus variety that is a spiny-free mutation of the regular Astrophytum myriostigma. This variety exhibits the same star-shaped, ribbed body as the typical species, but lacks the white flecks or spots (areoles) that give the plant its characteristic “starry” appearance. Instead, A. myriostigma nudum has a smooth, light green or bluish skin, creating a clean, unblemished surface. The cactus typically grows to a height of 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) with similar width, similar to the typical A. myriostigma.

The plant’s five or more prominent ribs are still present, contributing to its geometrically symmetrical appearance. It also produces large, vibrant yellow flowers with a red center, though these may appear only under ideal conditions.

Native Range:
Astrophytum myriostigma var. nudum hails from the arid regions of northeastern Mexico, specifically areas within the states of Coahuila, Nuevo León, and San Luis Potosí. It thrives in rocky, semi-desert environments, often growing in dry, well-drained soil, where it faces harsh sunlight and minimal rainfall. Like other cacti, it is perfectly adapted to the extreme conditions of its native habitat, where it can store water in its thick, fleshy body.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Astrophytum myriostigma nudum requires full sunlight to thrive. It prefers bright, direct sunlight and will do best when placed in a sunny spot, either in a windowsill or outdoors during warm months. In indoor environments, grow lights may be necessary to replicate the cactus’s native growing conditions.
  • Watering: This cactus, like all desert cacti, is highly drought-tolerant. It is best watered thoroughly during the growing season (spring through summer), but only when the soil is completely dry. In winter, reduce watering to avoid the risk of rot, as the cactus enters a dormant phase during the cooler months.
  • Soil: Astrophytum myriostigma nudum requires well-draining soil to prevent waterlogging. A cactus mix or a sandy soil mix with added perlite or pumice is ideal. The soil should be loose and fast-draining to allow excess moisture to escape.
  • Temperature: This variety of Astrophytum prefers temperatures between 70°F and 90°F (21°C–32°C) during the growing season. During winter, it can tolerate cooler temperatures, around 50°F (10°C), but should be kept frost-free, as it is sensitive to freezing conditions.
  • Fertilizing: During the growing season (spring through summer), feed the plant with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing in winter when the plant is dormant.
  • Repotting: This cactus generally grows slowly, so repotting may not be necessary often. If it outgrows its pot, repot it every 2–3 years into a slightly larger container with good drainage.

Propagation:
Propagation of Astrophytum myriostigma nudum is usually done from seeds. These seeds should be sown in well-draining soil and kept in a warm, sunny spot with minimal moisture until they germinate. Germination can take several weeks, and young plants should be handled carefully.

Unique and Special:
What makes Astrophytum myriostigma nudum unique is its lack of spines and spots, giving it a smooth and striking appearance that stands out even among other Astrophytum species. Its simplicity and “naked” look, combined with its geometric form, make it an attractive option for cactus enthusiasts. The plant’s lack of spines makes it easier to handle than many other cacti, while still offering the intriguing visual appeal typical of cacti. Additionally, like other Astrophytum varieties, A. myriostigma nudum is a collector’s favorite for its rarity and unusual form, making it highly prized among succulent and cactus lovers.
