Fockea
Genus Fockea – The Hottentot Bread
Description:
Fockea is a fascinating genus of caudiciform plants within the Apocynaceae family, native primarily to southern Africa. These remarkable plants are best known for their swollen caudexes, which serve as water-storage organs and can become impressively large with age. From the caudex emerge slender, twining vines that can climb, trail, or be trained onto supports. Species such as Fockea edulis are particularly popular among collectors for their sculptural appearance and bonsai-like character.
The caudex often develops attractive textures and patterns over time, making each plant unique. Although the flowers are generally small and subtle, the true appeal of Fockea lies in its extraordinary form, longevity, and ability to thrive under dry conditions.
General Care:
- Light: Prefers bright light to full sun. Mature plants enjoy several hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Water: Water moderately during the active growing season, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during dormancy.
- Soil: Requires a very well-draining succulent mix with added grit, pumice, or coarse sand.
- Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions and should be protected from frost. Ideal range is 10–35°C.
- Feeding: Feed lightly during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer.
- Maintenance: Provide support if you wish to train the vines. Pruning can be used to control growth and maintain shape. Avoid overwatering, particularly during dormancy.
Note: Many growers expose part of the caudex above the soil over time to highlight its unique shape and character, creating a striking display plant.
With their impressive swollen bases, elegant climbing stems, and exceptional drought tolerance, Fockea species are treasured by collectors and make outstanding specimens for caudiciform and succulent collections.
