Euphorbia milii – Appearance and General Care

Description:
Euphorbia milii, commonly known as the Crown of Thorns, is a popular flowering succulent shrub native to Madagascar. It is known for its thick, thorn-covered stems and bright green leaves, which create a striking contrast against its colourful blooms. Unlike many succulents that flower only seasonally, Euphorbia milii can produce masses of flowers throughout much of the year. These blooms come in shades of red, pink, orange, yellow, white, and bi-colours, making it one of the most rewarding flowering succulents available.

General Care:

  • Light: Prefers full sun to bright light. More sunlight encourages stronger growth and abundant flowering.
  • Water: Water thoroughly when the soil is dry, allowing excess water to drain away. Reduce watering during cooler months.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining succulent or cactus mix.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions and should be protected from frost. Ideal range is 15–35°C.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer to encourage flowering.
  • Maintenance: Easy to grow and drought tolerant. Prune as needed to maintain shape and encourage branching.

Note: Like all Euphorbias, the plant contains a milky white sap that can irritate skin and eyes. Handle with care.

With its colourful flowers, exceptional drought tolerance, and long flowering season, Euphorbia milii remains one of the most popular and rewarding succulent shrubs for gardens, patios, and containers.
