Aloe ‘Tom Thumb’ – Appearance and General Care
Description:
Aloe ‘Tom Thumb’ is a charming miniature aloe developed by renowned South African aloe breeder Andy de Wet. This compact cultivar forms tight rosettes of thick, triangular leaves adorned with attractive white markings and fine marginal teeth. Remaining much smaller than most aloes, it is perfectly suited to windowsills, small pots, fairy gardens, and collector displays. In bright light, the foliage may develop attractive bronze, pink, or reddish tones. Mature plants may produce delicate flower spikes bearing tubular orange to coral-red flowers, adding further appeal to this delightful miniature.
General Care:
- Light: Prefers bright light to full sun. Good light encourages compact growth and enhances foliage colour.
- Water: Water moderately during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
- Soil: Use a well-draining succulent or cactus mix with added grit or pumice.
- Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions and should be protected from severe frost. Ideal range is 10–30°C.
- Feeding: Feed lightly during spring and summer with a balanced succulent fertilizer.
- Maintenance: Easy to grow and drought tolerant. Offsets may be removed and replanted to create new plants.
Aloe ‘Tom Thumb’ is a highly desirable miniature aloe, combining the toughness and beauty of larger aloes in a compact, collector-friendly package. Its small size, attractive markings, and South African heritage make it a standout addition to any succulent collection.
