Kalanchoe beharensis – Elephant’s Ear Kalanachoe

Kalanchoe beharensis, commonly known as “Felted or Elephant Ear Plant,” is a striking succulent species known for its unique leaf texture and striking growth habit. Below are the key characteristics of this fascinating plant:

  • Leaf Appearance: One of the most distinct features of Kalanchoe beharensis is its large, velvety, felt-like leaves. The leaves are broad and oval, often with a silvery or grayish hue due to a dense coating of soft hairs, which gives them a felted texture. They are typically around 4 to 6 inches long and 3 inches wide, making the plant visually striking and easy to identify.
  • Growth Habit: Kalanchoe beharensis is a shrub-like succulent that can grow up to 3 feet (90 cm) in height when mature. It has a branching structure with thick, woody stems that support the large leaves. This species tends to develop a bushy, compact form, though it can also become leggy if not given sufficient light.
  • Flowers: This species produces small, bell-shaped flowers, usually orange or red in color, though they are not as prominent or striking as the leaves. The plant typically flowers in the winter to early spring, but the blooms are often more of a secondary feature compared to the plant’s foliage.

Native Range:

Kalanchoe beharensis is native to Madagascar, an island renowned for its rich biodiversity and unique flora. This species typically grows in the dry, rocky areas of the island, where it thrives in well-draining soils and areas that receive plenty of sunlight.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Kalanchoe beharensis prefers bright, indirect sunlight. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially during the cooler parts of the day, but prolonged exposure to harsh sun can lead to leaf burn. When grown indoors, it does well near a window with plenty of natural light.
  • Soil: Like most succulents, it requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot. A cactus or succulent potting mix works well, but you can also amend regular potting soil with perlite or sand to improve drainage.
  • Watering: Kalanchoe beharensis is drought-tolerant and does not require frequent watering. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, and avoid keeping the plant in moist conditions for too long. Overwatering can lead to root rot, a common problem for succulents.
  • Temperature: This plant thrives in warm temperatures, ideally between 60°F and 85°F (15°C – 29°C). It is not frost-tolerant, so if you live in an area with cold winters, it’s best to grow it indoors or in a container that can be brought inside during frost conditions.
  • Fertilization: Feed Kalanchoe beharensis with a diluted, balanced fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid fertilizing during the winter when the plant is not actively growing.
  • Propagation: This species can be propagated through leaf cuttings or stem cuttings. The cuttings should be left to callous over for a few days before being planted in well-draining soil. With proper care, they will root and develop into new plants.

Unique and Special Characteristics:

Kalanchoe beharensis stands out from other succulents due to its distinctively textured, felted leaves that give it a soft, almost plush appearance. This makes it a standout in succulent collections or as a decorative plant in homes and gardens. Its unique foliage, paired with its relatively low-maintenance care, makes it a popular choice for both novice and seasoned succulent growers.

Additionally, the plant’s slow, bushy growth habit allows it to thrive in containers or as a small shrub, making it versatile in different growing environments. The silvery leaves, particularly when backlit, create a stunning visual effect that captures attention, and its resilience to dry conditions adds to its allure as a hardy yet aesthetically pleasing plant.
