The most distinctive feature of this species is the “window” effect on the top of the leaves. The tips of the leaves are translucent and allow light to penetrate into the plant, which helps it photosynthesize in low-light environments. These windowed tips are often curved, giving the plant an almost “boat-shaped” appearance, hence the species name “cymbiformis” (from “cymbi” meaning boat-like and “formis” meaning form).

The leaves grow in tight, dense rosettes, typically ranging from 3 to 4 inches (7-10 cm) across. This species does not produce a significant stem, and it is mainly grown for its interesting foliage.
